Quick answer
The most common reason: a free personal Google account can't record Meet. Recording needs an eligible Google Workspace edition, Workspace Individual, or a Google One plan with 2 TB or more, plus an admin who allows it, and the host must have permission too. If you can't get that, ask the host to record, or record your own screen with everyone's agreement.

8 reasons Meet won't let you record
| Reason | How to tell | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Your plan doesn't include recording | Personal @gmail.com account without Google One 2 TB+, or a Workspace edition not on Google's list (for example Business Starter) | Use an eligible plan, ask someone with one to host, or use the fallback below |
| 2. Your admin hasn't turned recording on | Work or school account on an eligible edition, still no Record option | Ask your Google Workspace admin to allow meeting recording |
| 3. The host has no recording permission | You can record your own meetings but not this one | Even if you have permission, you can't record if the host doesn't. Ask the host to record |
| 4. Host controls / Host Management are on | You're a participant, not the host or co-host | Ask the host to record or to make you a co-host |
| 5. You're outside the host's organisation | You joined a meeting from another company or school | The host can promote you to co-host |
| 6. Education edition rules | Education Fundamentals or Standard account | On these editions teachers, staff and students can't record meetings they organise; Teaching and Learning Upgrade or Education Plus can |
| 7. You're on iPhone or iPad, or joined only to present | Meet on iOS, or a "present only" join | Record from a computer or Android device; join the meeting first, then present |
| 8. Drive storage is full | An alert in Meet; your or your organisation's Drive is at quota | Free up space in the organiser's Drive (recordings save there) |
Which Google plans can record Meet?
Google's help page lists: Business Standard, Business Plus, Essentials, Enterprise Starter, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Standard and Enterprise Plus; Education Plus (staff licences) and Teaching and Learning Upgrade; Workspace Individual; and Google One subscribers with 2 TB or more of storage. A free personal Google account isn't on the list.
When Meet does record: what you get
- Recording starts from Meeting tools → Recording → Start recording on a computer. Participants are notified when it starts and stops.
- The video shows the active speaker and anything presented, up to 1080p for screen shares; other windows and notifications aren't included.
- It saves to the organiser's Google Drive in the "Google Meet" folder, and a link is emailed to the organiser and the person who started it.
- Recordings stop automatically after 8 hours, or when everyone leaves.
The easiest fix: ask the host
If the host has an eligible plan, they can start the recording and the file appears in their Drive; attendees from the same organisation get access automatically. Hosts can also set a meeting to record automatically when it starts (Video call options → Meeting records).
The fallback: record your own screen, with agreement
Ask first. A screen recorder doesn't show the meeting app's own recording notice. Say you're recording at the start, get agreement, and follow your organisation's rules and local law.
If nobody in the call can use Meet's recording, you can record what your own screen shows with a screen recorder, such as ChromeOS Screen capture, Windows or macOS tools, or a Chrome extension. Bobbin, a free Chrome extension, records the Meet tab with your microphone and everyone's voices (tab audio) and saves an MP4 on your computer, with no account and no time limit. What a screen recorder can't do: it doesn't join as a bot, can't record a meeting you're not in, doesn't make transcripts or Gemini notes, and doesn't save to the organiser's Drive. Bobbin doesn't host videos or make share links, and it has no editing, transcripts, comments, viewer analytics, team workspace or mobile app.
