Quick answer
Yes, Screencastify has a free plan, with no card needed: up to 10 videos (plus up to 20 bonus videos for inviting friends), recordings up to 30 minutes and a Castify watermark. Starter ($7 per user a month billed annually, $19 monthly) removes the video cap and the watermark on new videos and raises the limit to 60 minutes. Pro ($10 annually, $25 monthly) allows 180 minutes plus AI features.

What the free limits mean in practice
- 10 videos is a total, not per month. Once you have 10 videos, delete old ones or upgrade to record more (inviting friends adds up to 20 more).
- 30 minutes per recording is enough for most class assignments, but not a full lecture or long training session.
- The watermark appears on free videos. Starter removes it on videos you record after upgrading.
- Downloads are limited. The plan table caps MP4, MP3 and GIF exports at 5 videos on Free and Starter; most sharing happens through Screencastify's watch page or Google Drive.
Is Screencastify free for teachers and students?
Teachers and students can use the same Free plan as everyone else. Schools and districts buy the Enterprise & EDU plan through sales; if your school has a licence, your account may already have more than the free limits. Ask your IT admin before paying for Starter yourself.
If the free plan isn't enough
If you only need the recording as a file, Bobbin is a free Chrome extension with no video cap, no time limit, no watermark and no account. It records your screen, a window or a tab with a webcam bubble (or camera only), mic and tab audio, and saves an MP4 where Chrome supports it, straight to your computer, ready to upload to Google Classroom, Canvas or Drive. Optional Pro is $4.99/month or $24 once (founding price) for 1440p/4K and 60 fps where your screen and computer support it, bubble styling, an auto-stop timer and custom file names, with a 7-day refund. Founding price for the first 100 buyers. Then $39 lifetime / $5.99 per month.
Bobbin doesn't host videos or make share links, and it has no editing, transcripts, comments, viewer analytics, team workspace or mobile app.
