Quick answer
Press Shift+Ctrl+Show windows, choose Screen record, open Settings and pick Microphone, Device audio or both. If the option is missing or greyed out, your school has turned off screen capture; open chrome://policy to see the school's settings, and ask your teacher or IT team which recorder is approved. There is no safe way around a school policy.

1. Record with the built-in tool (if allowed)
- Press Shift+Ctrl+Show windows (or open Quick Settings and choose Screen capture).
- Choose Screen record, then full screen, a partial area or a window.
- Open Settings in the bar: pick Microphone for your voice, Device audio for sound from the Chromebook, or both. Turn on Front Camera if your teacher wants your face.
- Start, then stop with the red button in the shelf. The video is saved to Downloads as a .webm file.

2. Why it might be blocked
School Chromebooks are managed from the Google Admin console. Google's admin help lists settings that schools can use to control recording:
| Admin setting | What it controls | What you notice |
|---|---|---|
| Screenshot | Screenshots on ChromeOS, by any means, including the keyboard shortcut and apps and extensions that use Chrome's screenshot API | Screen capture is missing or greyed out |
| Screen video capture allowed by sites | Whether websites may ask to share a tab, window or your entire screen | Web recorders can't start, or only approved sites can |
| Audio input (microphone) | Whether websites and apps may use the microphone | Recordings have no voice |
| Video input (camera) | Whether websites and apps may use the camera | No webcam, or a black bubble |
| Apps and extensions | Which extensions you may install | Add to Chrome is blocked or the extension is removed |
Settings like these can change by class or year group, so a friend's Chromebook may behave differently from yours.
3. Check what your school allows
- Type
chrome://managementin the address bar to see whether your Chromebook is managed and by whom. - Type
chrome://policyto list the policies your school has applied. Look for ones about screenshots, screen capture, audio or video capture and extensions. - If a recorder your teacher named won't install, it isn't on your school's allowed list.
4. Use a recorder your school allows
Many schools approve one recorder (Screencastify is common in K-12). If yours allows Chrome extensions, Bobbin is a free option: it records your screen, a window or a tab with your mic and a webcam bubble, and saves the video to your Chromebook as a file you can upload to Google Classroom or Canvas.
Free: no account, no watermark, no time limit, up to 1080p at 30 fps, and nothing is uploaded. Whole-screen system audio works on ChromeOS, so you can record sound from the Chromebook as well as your voice. It saves an MP4 where Chrome supports it.
Bobbin doesn't host videos or make share links, and it has no editing, transcripts, comments, viewer analytics, team workspace or mobile app.
Don't try to bypass school settings. Tricks that promise to unlock a managed Chromebook can break your school's rules and put your account at risk. If an assignment needs a recording and nothing works, tell your teacher: they can ask IT to allow a tool, or accept another format.
No sound in your school recording?
- In the built-in tool, you didn't pick an audio option in Settings, or you picked only Microphone when you needed Device audio.
- In a browser recorder, the audio switch in Chrome's share picker was off.
- Your school may block the microphone for websites and apps; check
chrome://policyand ask IT.
More fixes: screen recording has no sound.
