Onboarding video script for a new teammate

A short welcome video recorded before someone's first day answers the questions they're too new to ask, and saves the first meeting for real conversation. This is script O1 from The Async Video Playbook.

Quick answer

Keep it to 2–3 min: welcome them by name, show where things live, explain the first week, and say who to ask. Record your screen with your face in a bubble so it feels personal. Script below.

The script: Day-one welcome for a new teammate (2–3 min)

O1 · Day-one welcome for a new teammate2–3 min

Use when: Before or on a new hire's first day, so they have context before the first meeting.

Set up:

  • Open the team page, the week-one checklist and the main tool
  • Write their name on screen somewhere (a doc title works)
  • Look at the camera for the first 10 seconds
TimeShow / beatSay (fill the [blanks])
0–20 sPersonal welcomeHi [NAME], welcome to [TEAM]. I am [YOUR NAME], your [ROLE]. Watch this whenever suits you this week.
20–60 sWhy your role existsYou are joining because [REAL REASON THE ROLE WAS OPENED]. In three months, success looks like [CONCRETE OUTCOME].
60–110 sWeek oneThis week you will: [THING 1], [THING 2], [THING 3]. Here is the checklist; tick things off as you go.
110–150 sWho to askFor [TOPIC] ask [PERSON]. For anything else, ask me in [CHANNEL]. No question is too small in week one.
150–180 sOne unwritten ruleOne thing nobody writes down: [UNWRITTEN RULE, e.g. "we reply to client email the same day, even if just to say we are on it"].

Why it works: The "unwritten rule" beat is the most-rewatched part of welcome videos. It is the context new people cannot get from the handbook.

Close: Tell them exactly where to ask their first question.

Client onboarding? The playbook also has a client onboarding kickoff script for agencies and freelancers (O6), a tool tour (O2) and a handover script (O4).

Record the video part

Keep the script open on a second screen or a printed page, and record in one take; pause between sections instead of stopping. Bobbin is a free Chrome extension that records your screen, a window or a tab with your microphone and an optional webcam bubble. No account, no watermark, no time limit, and nothing is uploaded: the file stays on your computer.

  1. Click the Bobbin icon in Chrome's toolbar and choose Record screen, window or tab.
  2. Pick your microphone and turn on the camera if you want the webcam bubble.
  3. Press Start recording, choose what to share in Chrome's picker, and wait for the 3-second countdown.
  4. Pause with Alt+Shift+P, stop with Alt+Shift+S, then press Download to save the file.

Share a window or the entire screen so your webcam bubble is in the video (it doesn't appear in single-tab recordings). Bobbin saves MP4 where your browser supports it (Chrome 126 or newer), WebM otherwise, and tells you which it used.

File size: our 60-minute 1080p test came to about 246 MB (roughly 4 MB a minute) on a simple synthetic screen; busy real screens can be larger, so a 1–2 minute clip is usually small enough to attach.
