Quick answer
In our test, a 60-minute 1080p screen recording was 245.7 MB (H.264 video at 1920×1080 with Opus audio), so plan on about 250–275 MB per hour at 1080p30. Busy screens (video playback, fast scrolling) can be larger; mostly static slides can be smaller. An 11-minute 1280×800 recording was 45 MB.
How we measured it
On 22 October 2026 we recorded one continuous 60-minute take with Bobbin at 1080p: 3,602.9 seconds of video, saved as a 245.7 MB MP4 (H.264, 1920×1080, Opus audio). Exporting the file took about 3 seconds, and memory use stayed flat for the whole hour because Bobbin writes the recording to disk every second.
Caveat: the test used Chrome's synthetic test screen and microphone on a server, not a real desktop. Real screens with lots of motion compress less well, so your files may be larger. Treat 246 MB/hour as a baseline, not a promise.
Estimated sizes at 1080p (from our test rate)
| Length | Approx. size | Fits in a 25 MB email attachment? |
|---|---|---|
| 2 minutes | ≈ 8 MB | Usually |
| 5 minutes | ≈ 20 MB | Just about |
| 10 minutes | ≈ 41 MB | No |
| 30 minutes | ≈ 123 MB | No |
| 1 hour | ≈ 246 MB (measured) | No |
| 2 hours | ≈ 490 MB | No |
For comparison, a free Google Account comes with 15 GB of storage shared across Drive, Gmail and Photos, which at this rate is roughly 60 hours of 1080p recordings. Gmail attachments are limited to 25 MB (larger files are sent as a Drive link), and Slack accepts files up to 1 GB.
What makes a screen recording bigger
- Motion. Video playing on screen, scrolling and animations make the biggest difference.
- Resolution and frame rate. 1440p, 4K and 60 fps (Bobbin Pro, where your screen and computer support it) produce larger files than 1080p30. We haven't published a measured figure for those yet.
- Format. MP4 (H.264) and WebM (VP8/VP9) compress differently. Bobbin uses MP4 on Chrome 126 or newer and tells you which it used.
- Audio adds comparatively little.
Is there a maximum length?
Bobbin has no time limit on any plan; long recordings are limited only by your free disk space. If the disk fills up, failed writes are held in memory and retried, and the recording can still be downloaded. Other tools set their own caps: Loom's free Starter plan stops at 5 minutes and Screencastify Free at 30 minutes (their pages, checked 22 October 2026).
Sharing large recordings
Bobbin saves files on your computer and doesn't make share links, so upload big recordings to Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox or your LMS and share the link. Step by step: how to share a large screen recording.
