Accessibility testing checklist (10-minute manual check)

Automated checkers find only part of the problems; a few minutes with a keyboard and a screen reader finds the rest of the common ones. This quick check (R9 from our Bug Report & QA Kit) is for every new or changed screen. It is not a full WCAG audit.

Quick answer

On every changed screen: do everything with the keyboard (visible focus, no traps), check alt text, labels, error text and contrast (4.5:1 for body text), then run an automated checker, a screen reader pass on the main action, and a 200% zoom / 320 px check.

## Keyboard
- [ ] Every action reachable with Tab, Shift+Tab, Enter and Space
- [ ] Focus is always visible
- [ ] No keyboard trap; Escape closes dialogs and returns focus
- [ ] Tab order follows the visual order

## Content
- [ ] Images that carry meaning have alt text; decorative images are hidden
- [ ] Form inputs have visible labels, not only placeholders
- [ ] Errors say what is wrong and how to fix it, in text (not colour alone)
- [ ] Text contrast at least 4.5:1 (3:1 for large text)

## Tools
- [ ] Automated checker (e.g. Lighthouse or axe) shows no new issues
- [ ] Screen reader pass on the main action (VoiceOver or NVDA)
- [ ] Page works at 200% zoom and 320 px width without horizontal scrolling

Reporting what you find

File each barrier as its own issue with the screen, the assistive technology or tool used, what happened and what should happen. A short screen recording with the screen reader's audio makes focus and announcement problems obvious.

Record the video part

To capture what a screen reader says, record with system audio: in Bobbin that works when sharing the entire screen on Windows and ChromeOS. On a Mac, system audio isn't captured, so say what you hear into the microphone. Bobbin is a free Chrome extension that records your screen, a window or a tab with your microphone and an optional webcam bubble. No account, no watermark, no time limit, and nothing is uploaded: the file stays on your computer.

  1. Click the Bobbin icon in Chrome's toolbar and choose Record screen, window or tab.
  2. Pick your microphone and turn on the camera if you want the webcam bubble.
  3. Press Start recording, choose what to share in Chrome's picker, and wait for the 3-second countdown.
  4. Pause with Alt+Shift+P, stop with Alt+Shift+S, then press Download to save the file.

Share a window or the entire screen so your webcam bubble is in the video (it doesn't appear in single-tab recordings). Bobbin saves MP4 where your browser supports it (Chrome 126 or newer), WebM otherwise, and tells you which it used.

File size: our 60-minute 1080p test came to about 246 MB (roughly 4 MB a minute) on a simple synthetic screen; busy real screens can be larger, so a 1–2 minute clip is usually small enough to attach.

From The Bug Report & QA Kit

The kit also has an accessibility issue template (T9) and 8 more release checklists. The full kit: 10 bug templates for GitHub, Jira, Linear and Markdown, 9 release checklists (126 checks), the severity guide, 8 bug-video scripts and trackers.

Frequently asked questions

What should a manual accessibility test cover?

Keyboard access and visible focus, alt text, form labels, error messages, colour contrast, a screen reader pass on the main action, and zoom/reflow.

Is an automated accessibility checker enough?

No. Tools such as Lighthouse or axe catch some issues; keyboard and screen reader checks find problems tools miss.

Is this a WCAG audit?

No. It is a quick check for the most common barriers on each changed screen. A full audit tests every applicable WCAG success criterion.

Record your screen and camera. Keep the file.

Free, no account, no watermark, no time limit. Saves an MP4 on your computer.
