Quick answer
- Mac, whole screen or window is black: allow Chrome in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording, then quit and reopen Chrome.
- Only a streaming video is black: it is copy-protected and is meant to record black. There is no fix, and we won't help bypass it.
- A window went black: it was minimised. Keep it open or share the entire screen.
- Black frames on your own content: try turning off Chrome's Use graphics acceleration when available, relaunch and test again.

First: what exactly is black?
| What you see | Most likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Everything, on a Mac | Chrome isn't allowed to record the screen | 1 |
| Only a movie or TV player | Copy-protected (DRM) video | 2 |
| One window, part way through | The window was minimised or hidden | 3 |
| Flickering or black frames on normal content | Graphics acceleration or drivers | 4, 5 |
| Everything, on Linux | Screen sharing portal missing (Wayland) | 6 |
| Everything, on a work or school Chromebook | Your admin blocks capture | 7 |
| Only the webcam bubble | Camera busy or blocked | 8 |
| The file, in one player only | The player, not the recording | 9 |
1. Mac: allow Chrome to record the screen
- Choose Apple menu → System Settings → Privacy & Security.
- Click Screen & System Audio Recording and turn on Google Chrome (or your Chromium browser). Older macOS versions call this Screen Recording.
- Quit Chrome completely (Cmd+Q) and reopen it. The permission only takes effect after a restart.
Recording a single Chrome tab usually works without this permission, because Chrome captures its own tab. Windows and whole screens need it.
2. Protected video records black on purpose
Paid streaming services protect their video with DRM, so screen recorders capture a black rectangle where the movie plays while the rest of the page records normally. That is working as intended. Bobbin doesn't get around it, and you shouldn't try: recording protected content usually breaks the service's terms and copyright law. Record your own screen, your own videos, and content you have the right to share.
3. You minimised the window you were sharing
When you share a single window, the operating system can only capture it while it is being drawn. Minimise it and the recording may freeze or turn black until you restore it. Keep the window open (it can be behind others on some systems, but on screen is safest), or share the entire screen instead.
4. Try graphics acceleration off
On some graphics cards and drivers, content drawn by the GPU doesn't reach the screen capture, and you get black or flickering frames.
- Open Chrome Settings → System.
- Turn off Use graphics acceleration when available and click Relaunch.
- Record a 5-second test. If it fixed the problem, update your graphics driver and then try turning acceleration back on: leaving it off can make Chrome slower and use more battery.
5. Windows laptops with two graphics chips
Laptops with both integrated and dedicated graphics can capture black when the browser and the screen are handled by different chips. In Windows Settings → System → Display → Graphics, add Chrome and try Power saving, then High performance, restarting Chrome and testing each time. Update the graphics driver from your laptop maker too.
6. Linux: Wayland needs the screen sharing portal
On Wayland desktops, Chrome asks your desktop (through xdg-desktop-portal and PipeWire) for permission to capture the screen, and your desktop shows its own picker. If the portal for your desktop isn't installed or running, capture fails or comes out black. Install your desktop's portal package, log out and back in, and try again.
7. Work or school Chromebook: capture may be blocked
Admins can turn off screen capture, limit which sites may capture the screen, or block capture of specific sites. Open chrome://policy to see what is applied, and ask your IT team. Don't try to bypass it. More detail: screen recording on a school Chromebook.
8. Only the webcam bubble is black
- Another app (often a video call) is using the camera. Close it and start again.
- The camera is blocked for the extension or the site: check
chrome://settings/content/camera, and on a Mac, System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera. - No bubble at all, rather than a black one? You shared a single tab; the bubble appears in window and screen recordings only.
9. The file is black in one player only
If the recording plays fine in Chrome but is black in another player, the player is missing support for the format. Drag the file into a Chrome tab or open it in VLC. Bobbin saves an MP4 where your browser supports it (Chrome 126 or newer) and WebM otherwise, and tells you which it used after each recording.
Avoid it next time: the 5-second test
Before a long take, record five seconds, stop, and play it in Bobbin's Library. If it is fine, record for real. Bobbin saves every second to disk as you record, so if something does go wrong part way through, you keep what was recorded up to that point.
