How to screen record on a Mac with sound

Every Mac has a free screen recorder built in, and it can record your microphone. Recording the sound your Mac plays (a video, a call, an app) is harder. Here is what the built-in tool does, and how to record a Chrome tab with its sound without installing a desktop app.

Quick answer

Press Shift+Command+5 → choose a record tool → Options → Microphone → Record. That records your screen and your voice to a .mov file. Apple's guide lists microphone choices only; for sound playing in Chrome (a video, a web call, a demo), record that tab with tab audio, for example with Bobbin.

Method 1: the built-in Screenshot tool (your voice)

From Apple's Mac User Guide (checked 23 October 2026):

  1. Press Shift+Command+5 to open Screenshot.
  2. Choose Record the entire screen, Record a window or Record a portion of the screen.
  3. Click Options. Under Microphone, choose your microphone. You can also set a timer, show mouse clicks and choose where to save.
  4. Click Record. To stop, click the stop button in the menu bar.

Recordings are saved as .mov files named "Screen Recording" plus the date and time. The floating thumbnail lets you trim before saving.

Method 2: record a Chrome tab with its sound

If the sound you need is playing in Chrome, a Chrome extension can capture it, because Chrome supports tab audio on macOS. (It doesn't support whole-system audio on macOS, so this works for browser sound only.)

  1. Click the Bobbin icon → Record screen, window or tab. Tick Microphone and Tab / system audio.
  2. Press Start recording, choose the Chrome tab in the picker, and keep "Also share tab audio" on.
  3. Stop with Alt+Shift+S (Option+Shift+S) and press Download.

Note: the webcam bubble shows in screen and window recordings, not in single-tab ones. If you need your face and the tab's sound, record the tab, then a short camera-only clip, or use the built-in tool for the face part. Bobbin saves MP4 where your browser supports it (Chrome 126 or newer), WebM otherwise, and tells you which it used.

Frequently asked questions

Can I screen record on a Mac without downloading anything?

Yes. Press Shift-Command-5 to use the built-in Screenshot tool. It records the screen, a window or a selection, with your microphone.

How do I record internal audio on a Mac?

Apple's built-in tool lists microphone options only. If the sound is playing in Chrome, record that tab with tab audio using a Chrome extension like Bobbin. For sound from other Mac apps you need separate audio-routing software.

Why is my Mac screen recording silent?

Usually no microphone was selected under Options, or you expected the Mac's own sound, which the built-in tool doesn't list. Pick a microphone, or record the Chrome tab with tab audio.

Does Bobbin work on a Mac?

Yes, in Chrome and other Chromium browsers on macOS. It records your mic and tab audio; whole-screen system audio is available only on Windows and ChromeOS.

Record your screen and camera. Keep the file.

Free, no account, no watermark, no time limit. Saves an MP4 on your computer.
