How to record a customer support walkthrough video

A 90-second screen recording often replaces five paragraphs of support instructions and a follow-up ticket. Here is how to record one that customers actually watch, keep private data out of it, and attach it to your reply.

Quick answer

Record just the tab with the fix (so other tabs and notifications stay out), keep it under 2 minutes, say the goal first and confirm the result at the end, then attach the MP4 to your reply. A 90-second 1080p recording is about 6 MB.

A simple script

  1. Goal (5 s): "Here's how to export your invoices as a CSV."
  2. Where (10 s): show where they start, using the same screen they see.
  3. Steps (60 s): each click, slowly, naming the button as you press it.
  4. Result (10 s): show what success looks like.
  5. Next step (5 s): "If you don't see the button, reply and we'll check your plan."

Privacy checklist before you record

Recording it

  1. Click the Bobbin icon → Record screen, window or tab. Tick Microphone; tick Tab / system audio if the app makes sounds you want to show.
  2. Press Start recording and choose the Chrome tab in the picker.
  3. Walk through the script. Pause with Alt+Shift+P if you need to reset something.
  4. Stop with Alt+Shift+S and press Download.

Want your face for a friendlier reply? Record the window instead; the webcam bubble shows in screen and window recordings, not single-tab ones. Bobbin saves MP4 where your browser supports it (Chrome 126 or newer), WebM otherwise, and tells you which it used.

Sending it

Most help desks accept attachments, but size limits vary by tool and plan, so check yours. At our measured 1080p rate (about 4 MB a minute), short walkthroughs usually fit; Gmail's attachment limit is 25 MB. For longer videos, upload to your company's file storage and link it. See screen recording file sizes.

When another tool is better: if you want view tracking, comments or a hosted video page per ticket, a hosted tool fits better. Bobbin doesn't host videos or make share links, and it has no editing, transcripts, comments, viewer analytics, team workspace or mobile app.

Checked on 23 October 2026: Gmail Help: attachments. File size from our own 60-minute 1080p test.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a support video be?

Under 2 minutes for a single fix. Split longer processes into several short videos.

How do I keep private information out of a support recording?

Record a single Chrome tab instead of the whole screen, and use a demo or test account rather than real customer data.

Can I attach the video to a ticket?

Yes. Bobbin saves an MP4 on your computer that you can attach like any file. Check your help desk's attachment size limit.

Does the customer need anything to watch it?

No. MP4 plays in browsers and on phones.

Record your screen and camera. Keep the file.

Free, no account, no watermark, no time limit. Saves an MP4 on your computer.
